On the 20th of July 1680, the Rev Richard Cameron and a party of supporters of the Covenant were worshipping on Aird`s Moss. Under the cover of mist they were surrounded by Dragoons commanded by Bruce of Earshall, who had been pursuing them from Sanqhuar past New Cumnock for some days. Some accounts say there were sixty-three worshippers who took to the moss for safety and only a few escaped. The ones who escaped having to fight their way through the Dragoons who had encircled them. The Rev Cameron was one of those slain, the Dragoons then cut off his head and his right hand and took them to Edinburgh where they showed them to his father who was in jail for "non-conformity".
The mutilated body of Cameron was buried here with the rest of the dead, another eight names being on the monument. The photograph on the right is of the graveslab within the iron railing shown in the photgraph at the top of the page. The monument can be seen from the Cumnock to Muirkirk road and can be reached by a relatively easy fifteen minute walk. The photograph on the left shows the detail on the monument.Below is a photograph of the 2nd annual commemorative
conventicle held at the Airds Moss monument,3pm 27th July 2003.
