The photograph above shows "cup and ring" marks near Mauchline and are said to be some of the finest examples in the country.Though found at apparently unconnected sites UK-wide no definitive explanation as to their meaning has been established. Most other sites in Scotland though not all comprise of just one or two of the markings.They are said to date from the early Bronze age, probably around 1500 BC though it is possible they date to 3000 BC. This makes these carvings between 3500-5000 years old. The photograph below shows variations of the markings to be found at this site.The markings are not far from the main Cumnock to Mauchline road.
