On 19th June 1688 a party of Dragoons whilst escorting the Reverend David Houston to Edinburgh from Ayr spent the night at the Blue Tower Inn in Cumnock(The Blue Tower Inn was situated near Caddy`s Close, The Square, Cumnock). Cumnock locale supporters of the covenant heard of this and ambushed the party the next day at Bello path, Lugar. The Reverend Houston was injured but made his escape. John McGeachan, of Meikle Auchingibbert was one of the locals who freed Houston, but was shot and wounded. The commemorative plaque shown is situated at Bello Path where the ambush was made, just outside Lugar on the Muirkirk side. It is said he crawled home where he was hidden in a turf shelter where he died three weeks later. Four years earlier McGeachan had been named in a list issued by Charles II, the list consisting of......"persons who were supposed to have been under arms, or to have harboured those who were". A stone was erected in 1728 and a larger memorial was erected after a sermon in 1836. The gravestone shown is shown here with the later memorial which can be seen from the road from Logan in the banner photograph at the top of the page.
