Terringzean Castle near Cumnock probably dates from the 15th century. Once the property of the Crawford family who were related to William Wallace`s mother.
Previous to
the Crawfords the castle belonged to one Thomas Boyd who was the Earl of Arran whose wife Mary was King James III sister no less.
The Crawfords gained the property when Boyd fell out of favour with the king.
It was excavated in the late 19th century by Lord Bute, and at the same time the walls were stabilised.
The smaller photographs show detail in the structure.
Although in ruin today the oldest part which has walls ten feet thick can still be
seen.Close up it can be seen that it was more
than just a tower with remains projecting out from the tower and the castle encircled by
a deep defensive trench/moat.Terringzean Castle is situated on a raised bank overlooking the River Lugar and can be seen from the main road as it bypasses
Cumnock.
